Monster time

Taxonomy of Terms / VI. Affect, time and attention

CNS term, extending crip time (Kafer, 2013; Samuels, 2017).

The temporality kept by the monstrous child in children’s literature and media. Its monsters loop, stall, arrive too early or too late, and return after they have been banished. Texts that stage neurodivergent, disabled, mad and angry children as spectacle, in the freak show, the circus, the carnival and the arena, usually end by demanding cure, recovery or a return to normal. Monster time is where these texts resist the endings they are built to reach.
