Anagnorescence

Taxonomy of Terms / VI. Affect, time and attention

CNS term. Defined in Ezzy (2026).

Recognition that arrives as a duration rather than an event. The term draws on anagnorisis, the moment of recognition in classical tragedy, and adds the sense of a recognition that emerges and deepens over time. It names the slow coming-into-knowledge of one’s own neurodivergence, and the intuitive, often pre-diagnostic recognition of shared cognitive, sensory and affective processing between neurodivergent people, outside clinical validation. Because it grounds belonging in shared experience rather than in access to diagnosis, it matters politically. Applied to narrative, it describes recognition that unfolds gradually rather than in a single scene.
